> What is answer engine optimization? See how AEO differs from SEO and GEO, why AI answers are cutting clicks, and how businesses get cited.

- **What This Covers:** What answer engine optimization means, how it differs from SEO and GEO, and why it now affects how customers find you
- **Who It's For:** Business owners and marketing leads who keep hearing "AEO" and want a straight explanation
- **Key Takeaway:** SEO gets your page ranked, AEO gets your business quoted as the answer, and AEO only works when your SEO is solid

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your website and business information easy for answer engines to find, trust, and quote. Answer engines are tools that give people a direct answer instead of a list of links: Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and voice assistants. SEO earns you a spot in the results. AEO makes your business the answer itself.

Here's a small disclaimer. There's a new acronym seemingly every month: AEO, GEO, AI SEO. But when it comes down to it, AEO is simply SEO. You will not have good-performing AEO if your traditional SEO is not solid.

## What Is an Answer Engine?

An answer engine is any search tool that responds to a question with a written answer rather than ten blue links. Google started moving this way with featured snippets and [the Google answer box](/blog/google-answer-box-what-is-it-how-to-optimize-for-it/), and AI chat tools now write full answers that cite only a few sources. In a list of ten results, the business in position seven still gets seen. In an AI answer that cites two or three sources, everyone else is left out.

## Why Is Answer Engine Optimization Important Now?

Answer engine optimization is important now because answers are replacing clicks. In a [Pew Research Center study published in July 2025](https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/07/22/google-users-are-less-likely-to-click-on-links-when-an-ai-summary-appears-in-the-results/), 58% of the 900 US adults tracked ran at least one Google search in March 2025 that showed an AI summary. When a summary appeared, they clicked a regular result in just 8% of visits, compared with 15% when it didn't.

[Ahrefs' April 2025 study](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-overviews-reduce-clicks/) of 300,000 keywords found that an AI Overview in the results correlated with a 34.5% lower average click-through rate for the top-ranking page. You can rank first and still lose about a third of your clicks to the summary above you. Unless that summary cites your business, you get nothing from that search.

Branded searches aren't safe either. [Ahrefs found](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-overviews-on-branded-searches/) that 73.3% of the branded keywords it tracked on US desktop triggered an AI Overview in September 2026, up from 61.3% in July. Even a search for your own business name may now show an AI summary before your site.

## How Is AEO Different From SEO and GEO?

AEO, SEO, and GEO overlap, and all three are really part of SEO. Each one just describes a different result. SEO is about ranking web pages in search results. AEO is about being chosen as the direct answer. [Generative engine optimization](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generative_engine_optimization) (GEO) is about being cited inside answers written by AI models. Don't treat AEO or GEO as separate projects you can measure apart from SEO. We cover GEO in more depth in [What Is Generative Engine Optimization?](/blog/what-is-generative-engine-optimization/)

<table>
  <thead>
    <tr>
      <th></th>
      <th>SEO</th>
      <th>AEO</th>
      <th>GEO</th>
    </tr>
  </thead>
  <tbody>
    <tr>
      <td>Main goal</td>
      <td>Rank pages in search results</td>
      <td>Be chosen as the direct answer</td>
      <td>Be cited in AI-written answers</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
      <td>Where it shows up</td>
      <td>Google and Bing results pages</td>
      <td>Featured snippets, AI Overviews, voice answers, chat tools</td>
      <td>ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
      <td>Success metric</td>
      <td>Rankings, clicks, traffic</td>
      <td>Answer placements, citations, brand mentions</td>
      <td>AI citations, AI referral traffic</td>
    </tr>
    <tr>
      <td>What wins</td>
      <td>Relevance, authority, links</td>
      <td>Direct answers, clear facts, consistency</td>
      <td>Specific, sourced, current information</td>
    </tr>
  </tbody>
</table>

The three work together. A page that's slow, blocked, or poorly structured fails at all three. A page that's fast, readable, and full of clear, specific answers tends to do well in all three.

## How Do Answer Engines Decide Which Business to Cite?

Answer engines pick sources in three steps: they retrieve pages that might answer the question, select the most trustworthy and specific ones, and then use those pages' facts in the answer. [A 2026 study that ran 252,000 controlled trials across six AI models](https://arxiv.org/abs/2605.25517) found topical relevance and list position were the biggest drivers of being cited first, with price information and recent timestamps also helping. Our breakdown of [how to get cited by LLMs](/blog/how-to-get-cited-by-llms/) covers that research in detail.

The consistent finding is that specifics beat style. Pages that state clear facts, such as prices, locations, timelines, and named services, get cited more often than pages written in vague marketing language. Each step can also fail for technical reasons. If an AI crawler can't read your page, it never makes it past retrieval. That's why we build [AI-ready websites](/blog/ai-ready-website/) with the technical layers answer engines depend on.

## What Does AEO Look Like in Real Results?

AEO done well puts a business in front of people searching for it, on Google and in AI answers. We measured this on [FinancialAdvisors.com](https://financialadvisors.com/), a national financial advisor directory we work with. Over the past year, 82% of advisors whose profiles scored 80 or higher for completeness (18 of 22) showed up on Google's first page for their own name, versus 39% of advisors with less complete profiles (40 of 103).

We pulled 12 months of Google Search Console data (October 2025 to October 2026), kept only searches for each advisor's own name, and scored every live profile on fields like photo, bio, credentials, contact details and specialties. The gap showed up as a jump at 80+, not a gradual climb. It's a correlation, not proof: advisors with rare names rank more easily, and advisors who fill in their profiles may also link to them from their own sites. Even so, the gap is too large to be chance.

That pattern isn't the product of a new acronym. It comes from the same work this guide describes: complete, consistent profiles, clear facts on every page, and a site search engines and AI tools can read. It's the reason we say AEO is simply SEO done thoroughly.

## What Does AEO Look Like for a Local Business?

For a local business, answer engine optimization means being the business an AI names when someone asks "who's the best [service] near me." Answer engines draw on your website, your [Google Business Profile](/blog/optimize-your-google-business-profile/), your reviews, and business listings across the web, and they favor businesses whose information matches everywhere.

A plumber in Henderson, NV with the same hours, services, and service area on its website, Google Business Profile, and directory listings gives answer engines one consistent story to repeat. A competitor whose details conflict across those sources gives them a reason to recommend someone else. We cover the local side of this in our guide to [Local GEO and AEO](/blog/local-geo-and-aeo/).

## Can You Do Answer Engine Optimization Yourself?

You can do the content side yourself: write direct answers to customer questions, keep business details consistent, and add real prices and specifics to your pages. The technical side, like unblocking AI crawlers, making content readable without JavaScript, building connected schema, and tracking AI citations, takes specialist work. That's the part businesses usually hand to us.

## How Do You Measure Answer Engine Optimization?

You measure answer engine optimization by tracking where your business appears in answers, and not just where it ranks. The core metrics are AI referral traffic in Google Analytics 4, impressions in Google Search Console for question-style queries, and how often AI tools mention your brand when asked about your industry.

Traditional rank tracking misses most of this, because an answer engine can mention you without sending a click. Pair your analytics with regular checks of what ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google AI Overviews say about your business. ## Answer Engine Optimization FAQs

### What is answer engine optimization in simple terms?

Answer engine optimization is making your business easy for tools like Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT to quote as the answer. SEO helps you rank. AEO helps you get named in the answer itself.

### Is AEO replacing SEO?

No. AEO builds on SEO. Answer engines still depend on pages that are crawlable, fast, and authoritative, so strong SEO remains the foundation, and AEO adds the structure and specifics that earn citations.

### What's the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO covers every tool that gives direct answers, including featured snippets and voice assistants. GEO focuses specifically on being cited by generative AI models like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Most businesses need both, and the work overlaps heavily.

### How long does answer engine optimization take to work?

Technical fixes such as unblocking AI crawlers can take effect as soon as AI tools recrawl your site. Earning regular citations usually takes several months of consistent, specific content and accurate business information across the web.

### Do small businesses need AEO?

Yes. Local questions like "best dentist near me" are increasingly answered by AI tools that name only a few businesses. A small business that answer engines can read and trust can be named alongside, or ahead of, much larger competitors.
